1500m race tactics...some food for thought...

The following video is an example of two teammates dictating the tempo of the race and setting the tone...watch and listen to the commentators and see who wins...there will be a quiz later...

Now watch four years earlier in the 1996 1500m final...notice the difference in the race early on and watch the aggressiveness of the race...pay attention to what happens going into the final lap and why and see who capitalizes...

In this epic battle two British countrymen Steve Ovett and Sebastian Coe vie for Gold in 1980...watch the race unfold...see how it is won and listen to comments following the race...

And now a special one..."He never panicked at any stage"....

Nick Willis from New Zealand...

The lesson here is how PATIENT Nick was throughout the race, running the rail, staying confident in how the race was playing out and finishing with tremendous heart and guts.

I had the great pleasure of staying with Nick and his wife at their home in Michigan some years ago now. It was before this race sometime...Nick and I ran arond Ann Arbor, Michigan and did some drills on the track there that day. For my career it was one of my most cherished memories considering he would go on to become a Silver medalist in the Olympics...The winner of this Rashid Ramzi tested positive for drugs and was stripped of his medal, thus giving Nick a Silver medal in the Olympics.

Nick is arguably one the most intelligent race tacticians running currently...in 2006 he took on Craig Mottram and his training partner Nate Brannen in the Commonwealth Games...listen to the announcer going into the final quarter...Watch how this crazy race unfolded...and know that Nick had been feeling sick and under the weather going into the race...
