October

October

There are two stretches of time during the year where everything you work for is put to the test. From mid April to May 20th or so in Track and Field and October in Cross Country. We perpetually train year round and it is these times during the year when that work pays off.

We are now square in October and as we look ahead to this month, we need to pull all of our work together to deliver great performances throughout the month. Our season theme has been going from Good to Great. I have my thoughts on what constitutes "great" and I will share that in a minute. First some thoughts about  individual preparation;

In order to achieve a high level of performance this month, student-athlete needs to make quality decisions everyday. This includes managing time to ensure a lower stress level and getting rest for a championship performance. Sleep is more vital now then ever. Washing hands and staying away from sickness has increased importance. Getting homework finished and conducting yourself in ways that bring honor and respect to you, your family and our team has increased need. It really all has to come together for us to be our best individually....and with high levels of individual performance comes high levels of success for our team.

Make decisions this week that allow you the opportunity to be great on October 12th at League. This might mean NOT participating in every single possible homecoming event in order to manage time effectively. You should participate in some to be sure and I know you will, but do so with the idea that sacrificing time and energy spent might have reverberating effect to your school work, your athletic performance and our team. Have fun, make wise decisions, look to be great on October 12th.

What will be a "Great" League meet?

First and foremost...winning the JV boys and girls races... and having many personal best performances (assuming weather is conducive for fast times). 90% of what will make it a great performance is wrapped up in our JV side of things.

The other 10%.....we have been good at League for years.  League runner-ups numerous times since 2010 when we last won one. Can we finally get a League Championship or two?

The program score....

I have not mentioned it much this year yet, but we judge ourselves against the rest of the league with what we call the program score. Taking the team result of all four races at League, we add them together and the lowest score wins. So for example, If we finish 2nd in both boys and girls varsity and win both boys and girls JV races (2,2,1,1)...we will have a program score of 6. Four is a perfect score.

Since 2008 here is our program scores...

2008: 6
2009: ??
2010: 6
2011: 8
2012: 7
2013: 7
2014: 6
2015: 6
2016: 8 (Arvada West had 7 and was the first time we lost this category in Jeffco League in years)

Greatness this year means scoring lower then 6
...good is scoring 6-8 and cause for reevaluation is 9 or above.

JV League Champions...

7 straight team titles for boys team and the following individual League Champions:

2010: Nate Morrison
2011: Ryan Schnieder
2012: Cameron Mattson
2013:Ryan Schnieder
2014: Andrew Castagneri
2016: Connor Ohlson

Girls JV Team titles since 2008:

2008
2013
2014
2015

Girls individual  JV Champion since 2008:

2008: Moira McNiel
2013: Claire Aden
2014: Celina Wilkerson
