2016 League Championship Recap

Image
For a lot of our student athletes the League Championship race is their last opportunity for the season. For every athlete on our team the story line going into our league championship was different. We talk a lot about embracing the context and story with which we are participating in cross country. No matter what each student athlete ran, it is important to remember to frame your performances based on your context and story. Whether you got a personal best or you came up short, remember, running is something you can do your whole life. If you did not have the race you had hoped, you must rest in the fact, that at some point you can and will have another opportunity for redemption. We will highlight some notable performances here, but everyone should know the effort given by our team as a whole was phenomenal as usual for the League Championship. Every student athlete gave incredible effort and I left there incredibly proud of our kids and they way they rose to the occasion. Girls...

Framing your race performances

Framing your race performances For the large majority of the team, measuring success comes from running faster. In and of itself not bad, however this sport (cross country) is never run in a lab. Never. Every week, every day, every race is different. Multiple factors affect races. Arguably, none more so then weather and surface. After this week, where we had two races that we had some expectation of being fast, only to see that expectation fade away I feel compelled to explain how it's important to frame your race based on the factors and context of each race. So far this season we have had far more "slow" weather conditions then we have had "fast" weather conditions. Alamosa, albeit at 7000 ft was arguably our best weather day thus far. The real unfortunate evening thus far has been Dave Sanders where the course is in general fast enough to produce fast times, just not in a 20 mph windy 83 degree afternoon. You could almost say the same for Broomfield t...

107 10:51 5:29.30 1:49.29 7-2 I have coached 11 years now at Dakota Ridge High School and this season may be the most memorable for its incredible stress and challenges I never thought I would ever face. This week in particular was something I won't soon forget and will be processing for weeks and maybe years to come. We will see. I want to talk about a few performances this week that really stood out. Context is everything with me and these performances were full of context. 1:49.29 Let me begin with a redemptive race that was a year in the making. Last season, in the rain, we had a horrible drop of the baton in the league championship Sprint Medley. The year prior was a disaster as well. Putting all that aside, Carina Wilkerson, Genny Cruz, Olivia Landers and Cayli Hume put together a school record  800 Sprint Medley in 1:49.29 and it will give some seniors a chance to end their careers on the Jeffco track...during the state championship. 5:29.30 Monday at Val...

Weekend update....

PRACTICE @ 2-4pm @ Dakota Ridge short workout followed by a fun game.  Mother Nature is upset. Why could this be? A) She just can't stand Track and Field right now because Father Time flat out can not remember to put the toilet seat down AND because he just won't get around to painting the den.... Of which his excuse for... is that he is "BUSY" with a 9 hour track meet. B) Somewhere in Colorado is that one bride... who just HAD to have that outdoor wedding in the spring. Because and I quote "All the trees are in bloom and really pretty in the sun, and the day just won't be the same if we have it inside honey bunches...not mention that we don't quite fit in the church with 457 guests coming" C) The 2016 Presidential Election..."These are my choices?" She says eyebrows raised...Tornado here, flood there, Snow/ Rain mix over here...see how you like those choices Merica. D) Chihuahuas. Here is the deal.... WE ARE NOT DOING...
